Unusual-Pearls

Emirates Post has issued special stamps in five denominations on tools used in pearl diving, in association with the Department of Culture and Information, Government of Sharjah.

The stamps have been issued in the denominations of 50 Fils, 125 Fils, 175 Fils, 275 Fils and 375 Fils. Along with the stamps, a limited number of unique Souvenir Sheets priced at Dh 100 has been issued, with a half piece of pearl placed at the corner of each stamp. The stamps are available at all UAE post offices from December 21, 2005, according to a press release.

"Pearl diving has been an integral part of the economic life in the Arabian Gulf before the discovery of oil," said Abdullah Al Daboos, Director General, Emirates Post. "The early pearl divers used primitive tools to protect themselves and to carry out their activities successfully. Emirates Post is pleased to highlight these tools so that the modern generation understands better the activity of pearl diving."

Each of the stamps highlights tools like the boulder used for accelerating the diver's descent into the sea, the diver's outfit, the nose clip, the leather gloves used for protecting the fingers from the sharp edges of the oyster shells and the basket used for collecting the oysters.
