Philately Liechtenstein wins Grand Prix de l'Exposition WIPA

The most beautiful postage stamp of 2011 was recently selected by a jury of experts as part of the Grand Prix de l’Exposition WIPA held in the Stamp Gallery of the Austrian postal service headquarters in Vienna. First prize was awarded to the special-edition block “Chinese Signs of the Zodiac 2012 – Year of the Dragon” designed by Stefan Erne from Liechtenstein.

First created in 1981 by the organising committee of the Vienna International Postage Stamp Exhibition (WIPA) to honour the most beautiful postage stamp of 1980, the Grand Prix de l’Exposition WIPA is now awarded on an annual basis. This year saw a jury of postage stamp experts comprising the director of the Austrian postal service, Dr Georg Pölzl, and the CEO of MICHEL, Hans W. Hohenester, as well as stamp artists and representatives of the Austrian postal service, the Austrian state printing office, the philately trade press and the Federation of Austrian Philatelist Societies gather on 11 March 2013 to select the most beautiful stamp issued in 2011 from a total of 65 entries. In the end it was the innovative contribution from Liechtenstein featuring a dragon motif and combining fine silhouette cutting with state-of-the-art laser technology that came out on top with 149 points. Second place went to the Czech Republic (123 points), followed by the United Arab Emirates (115 points) in third place.

Philately Liechtenstein is delighted to have received this prestigious award.
